Jan-Feb 2003 From the Director's Chair, 2003...No Harley enthusiast should have any trouble making the transition to writing the correct year on their checks this year. In addition to H-D’s Centennial, 2003 also marks 20 years for the Harley Owners Group. The progress of HOG over twenty years is almost as impressive as the mechanical advances of the last century. To paraphrase Gerald Golding - motorcycles only work while they’re moving forward. The V-rod shows that Harley has no plans of sitting still, and likewise, HOG and your St. Paul chapter are planning to keep moving forward. Realizing that an organization like our HOG chapter depends on volunteers, we’ve developed a program to Recognize Every Volunteer with Incentives Toward Ultimate Participation. Members will get one REV point for each volunteer segment for specified duties listed in the next newsletter. Special recognition will be awarded to those members attaining a certain number of REV points. As spring approaches, plan to get involved with the St. Paul HOG Chapter and REV IT UP! Join me in thanking two members of the board for their years of dedicated service to the chapter. Pat M has been our Activities Chairperson for the last 3½ years and kept us busy year round with a variety of fun non-riding activities, in addition to planning the always scenic Fall Fun Run. Vickie S has served as Ladies of Harley Director for the last 3 years and assumed the task for LOH of supporting the Adopt-A-Family program for Christmas while leading us briskly down many back roads on the LOH-led rides. Thank you, Pat and Vickie, for all the hard work and I look forward to seeing you now relax, enjoy the ride, and have fun! These two board positions have been filled by the capable hands of Critter (Activities Chairman) and Beth Z (LOH Director). Welcome Beth and Critter as they are already hard at work on keeping the chapter moving forward. Ben S - Director Let The Sun Shine SUNSHINE and holiday greetings! So much activity in the off-riding season presents us with the question, will we ever get catch up? On a more somber note, Jack & Linda K lost their grandson in November after a very long medical battle. Please include the K family in your thoughts as we go through the holidays. We are on the path to an exciting 2003 riding season. For those who own a Harley with ideas of leaving your bike in the garage and applying coats of wax to it, this year won’t be for you. For those who have excitement in the St Paul HOG chapter, we will not let you down. The breakfast meeting is at Joseph’s Restaurant in St Paul every Saturday morning. Orders are taken at 8:00AM. Bring a friend, spouse, etc. as all are welcome - it is usually hot coffee, good food, lots of talk about bikes, and whatever else is on the menu. Remember: any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please call me, Ken Liddell, a.k.a. Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8:00PM 7 days a week, or email me at @@@. Ken L - Hospitality Chairperson Grounded HOG Bowling Hard to believe 2003 will include the 13th Annual Grounded HOGs Bowling Party, to be held February 2 at Wells Lanes in South St. Paul. The bowling starts at noon so be there by 11:30AM for registration/lane assignments. Wells Lanes is on Concord Blvd. about 1 mile north of 494 in South St. Paul. The first 2 games are going for personal best and also serve as a warm up for the fast-paced action of Scotch-Doubles with a HOG Twist. That is, participants are randomly assigned to a 2-person co-ed team. In the first game it’s "ladies first" with the man left to try for the spare if needed. Second game it’s reversed with the man leading-off and the woman batting clean up. While we catch our breath, cash prizes are awarded and the highest individual score is granted possession of the High Hog traveling trophy. The cost is $10 plus shoe rental and Wells Lanes is serving a breakfast buffet from 10 to 2 for $7.95. Bowlers of all skill levels are welcome and spectators always add to the mix. Not sure if the Ground Hog will see his shadow, but I need to know if we’ll see you! Participants should RSVP with a phone call to me at ###. Thanks! Susie S - Bowling Intramural Tourney Committee Head Annual Photo Contest This is a little reminder that the deadline for the photo contest is January 11, 2003. All HOG members attending the Leather and Lace Party will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite photo. At the party, you will be given a ticket for voting purposes only. All photos on the board will be numbered and a box with corresponding numbers will be available for you to drop in your ticket. Don’t confuse the photo ticket with your door prize ticket – you’ll miss the fun! The rules for entering are still the same: You may drop your photos off at the shop to my attention or hand them off to any of the board members. All photos may be retrieved after the contest. Good luck to all! Annemarie F - Chapter Photographer Shop News Melanie and I and the entire staff at St. Paul Harley-Davidson hope that you have been enjoying a happy and healthy holiday season. We are looking forward to an exciting and event-filled 2003 and are anxious to celebrate with you in this year of the Motor Company’s 100th Anniversary, our first St. Paul metro Minnesota State H.O.G. Rally, and the 4th Annual Lightning Run, amongst many other fun and memorable events which we have in store for us. I want to take this opportunity to bring you up to date and perhaps clarify some of the initiatives we have started and will continue to enhance here at the shop. There seems to be some confusion as to the purpose and meaning of the Motorcycle Value Program, or MVP, as it relates to HOG. My interpretation of HOG’s role is that of a fraternal organization of individuals who share common interests, primarily their enthusiasm for not just motorcycles but in this case specifically, Harley-Davidson motorcycles. It is a forum by which its members can gather and organize to enjoy those common interests as well as other social and community oriented events. It is my belief that HOG is an integral and essential factor that furthers our enjoyment of the sport that we all love so much. It is, however, like many things, something which will give back proportionately to what you put in. I think that’s a very positive thing in that we all get to decide our own level of involvement. I am particularly thankful for those of you who participate because it increases the enjoyment for all of us. I can only hope that those of you who have chosen to serve as volunteers or on the Board of Directors feel an enormous amount of satisfaction, because I know the tremendous amount of effort and commitment that you have all made. It is my wish, and this store’s goal, to continue to support, promote and encourage active participation in our chapter. MVP is an affinity program which exists to reward and offer added benefits to those individuals who support the dealership and its goals. Since one of the store’s goals is to encourage activity and participation in our HOG chapter, this will remain an element of MVP. An important distinction between HOG and MVP is that, with HOG, participation is its own reward. With MVP, participation and support can be measured and additional rewards and benefits can be administered in an unbiased and organized manner. Because MVP serves a completely different function than HOG, it could very well have existed within HOG. That was originally my vision; however, since I have been in this business I have learned much about trademark law. Since Harley-Davidson owns the rights to "HOG", an affinity program of this magnitude cannot be administered under the HOG name. Some of our goals for the upcoming year are not yet totally defined but in general they are: continue to identify additional rewards and benefits to increase value and desirability to those who support the store and the HOG chapter; better define and communicate those events and activities that qualify for MVP points; consider more ways in which MVP can be used to encourage actual participation in our HOG chapter and its activities; develop more ways to encourage HOG members to enjoy more benefits and rewards by participating in MVP. Our store, its affiliated organizations and its programs exist to serve our customers and enhance our enjoyment of motorcycling. It is our mission to delight, to be the best, the preferred, the most professional- the ultimate example of an ideal Harley-Davidson/Buell dealership. That will always be our goal. If you find that we have accomplished that, then please tell a friend. If any of us here, either individually or jointly, has failed to live up to that goal then please tell me. Have a wonderful New Year and ride safe, Tom G - President, St. Paul Harley-Davidson/Buell Leather and Lace Party Don’t forget that January 11 is the deadline for sending your money in for the St. Paul HOG chapter’s annual winter banquet. The cost is $21.00 a person and each chapter member can bring one guest if you’d like. The party is at the Prom Center in Oakdale on Saturday January 25. Cocktails begin at 5:30 followed by dinner at 7:00, then the awards and door prizes. Please bring your payment to the January chapter meeting, or mail it to me at: Pat M New Board Position Ever thought about getting more involved in the chapter but afraid of the time commitment? Well, come on in, the water’s fine! We’re seeking someone to join the Board of Directors in the new position of "Volunteer Coordinator." Having someone in this position will streamline chapter event planning. Committee heads would report their manpower needs to the "VC" and direct potential volunteers to contact the "VC" either by phone, email, or at a meeting. Let me stress the person in this position IS NOT a recruiter, but rather serves as a clearinghouse for the chapter’s volunteer needs. The list of volunteers is then turned over to the event chair. Tracking the points for the new REV IT UP program also falls under this position. A computer and email are required but you need not be an expert as we offer free training to go with the long hours and no pay. Those interested should contact Ben or Ken B or email @@@.
March - April 2003 From the Director's Chair Volunteering is the cornerstone of any successful chapter event. As part of the new "Rev It Up" plan, volunteering has been elevated to "cabinet level status." Please welcome Jim S, who joins the Board as its first Volunteer Coordinator. Here are many opportunities that will allow you to make things happen. We have chosen the destination for several ride dates, so ride leaders are needed to select a route and connect the dots - hopefully with many scenic dots, depending on the destination and timetable. Maybe you’d like to lead the ride to Jake’s in Menomonie on May 25, or June 21 to Mankato, or August 17 to Faribault? There should be enough riders to support 3 rides on August 27 to the 100th festivities in Milwaukee, and 2 rides to Tomahawk in September. This task isn’t easy, but you’ll get plenty of riding in as you search for a route suitable for riding as a group. May thru September we need teams of members to take ownership of the dinner before the chapter meetings. Get a team of 4 to 6 friends together and wow us with your feast. We provide the budget and the hungry masses - your team plans and prepares the meal. Hog Ambassadors are needed to grill hotdogs at the shop every Saturday (except during shop special events.) Any Saturday is up for grabs but the chapter has commitments to fill the following dates where we need 2 people for each shift of 10 ‘til noon, or noon ‘til 2. Choose from May 10 - 24, June 14 - 21, July 12 - 26, August 9 - 23, or September 13 - 20. There’s no shopping involved in Hot Dog Saturdays - just show up to grill-n-visit. A team of 3 or 4 is needed to handle the Bull’s Eye Bonanza Target Shooting competition and it’s picnic lunch on July 19. Working the State Rally or the Lightning Run will also pay “Rev points.” The Lightning Run has a separate Volunteer Coordinator, but for anything else contact Jim at the number listed on the back of the newsletter. Thanks Jim! Join me in thanking Vicki L for her service as Membership Chairperson, and welcoming Patricia F as she moves from the support staff into chairing the membership committee. And advanced thanks to all of you for remembering that every member serving just 2 hours per year allows us all to "Ride and Have Fun!" Ben S - DirectorLet The Sun Shine SUNSHINE, COLD, SNOW, SAND & SALT…sounds to me that we are in the winter season - the good news is we are on the backside of it. For those who missed the winter banquet, it was a hoot! Congrats to Pat M for putting together a great event. The bankers in the next room were curious as to what bikers looked like in the winter - we heard comments such as we "looked like a fun group of people" and "you guys even wear leather in the winter." Of course it probably helped that a few of us went over to their party to dance! Nancy A's mother passed away in January. Her mother gave us a great gift - she gave us Nancy as a sister and a friend. Frenchie from the breakfast group had surgery – he’ll be ready to ride when the season arrives. Our Assistant Director, Ken B, is recovering from more surgery – this time on his elbow. What will it be next, Ken? The breakfast gathering is at Joseph’s Restaurant in St Paul every Saturday morning. Orders are taken at 8:00AM. Bring a friend, spouse, etc. as all are welcome - it is usually hot coffee, good food, lots of talk about bikes, and whatever else is on the menu. Remember: any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please call me, Ken L, a.k.a. Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8:00PM 7 days a week, or email me at @@@ Ken L - Hospitality Chairperson Grounded HOG Bowling This year’s Bowling Party had an extra element of suspense...would we even get to have the party? Many participants met at the lanes for breakfast before the party and in the background was the din of shop-vacs. Overnight, melting snow and a leaky roof littered the lanes with ceiling tiles in puddles of water. But the staff of Wells Lanes worked hard to prepare six of the lanes for our use and we were good to go at High Noon. A field of 34 bowlers took-up the challenge and after the (rosin) dust settled, the winners and losers were: 2-game series: (Women's) Gretchen M won with 312 followed closely by Teri B with 297. (Men's) A commanding win by Bill L with 388 over Ben S 355. (Scotch Doubles) Teri B and Don D won with 325 while Aimee B and Ben S's 306 placed second. Booby prizes (yes, these are for 2 game series) Woman's- Tammy H,159; Men's-Don D,151; Doubles-Liz D/Greg W, 207. And for the single highest score the High Hog Trophy returns to it's 2001 title holder, Bill L with 219! Susie S - Bowling Intramural Tourney Committee Head Annual Photo Contest Congratulations to the winners of the 2002 photo contest: 1st Place: Susie S Annemarie F - Chapter Photographer Let’s Play In The Snow! It’s a St. Paul HOG Ski & Tubing Party on March 8, 3:00 pm. Meet at Afton Alps, the Meadows Chalet, in the lounge. Tubing is $13 for 3 hours. All day lift tickets are $24 and ski rental is $18. If you need information about Afton Alps, call 651-436-5245 Critter - Activities Chairman Safety First As the days get longer I am sure that you must be longing for the rubber on the road and the wind in your face. Please keep in mind the HAZARDS of spring: pot holes, road debris, and the ever-dangerous SAND. These little buggers pop up at the most unexpected moments. Until you are familiar again with the roadways and you have a chance to brush up on your skills, pay extra close attention to your surroundings. Having your scoot in tip-top operating condition with proper tires, brakes, and properly adjusted controls is equally important to ensuring a great, satisfying ride.As of this writing I’m still in the process of arranging for 2-4 ERC classes with 10-12 riders per class. I’m trying to get dates of mid May weekends and the first weekend in June. The class has had revisions from previous years: no classrooms to sit in (yeah!) and just 5 hours on the range riding your own motorcycle on a structured course. It’s a very good confidence building experience in acknowledging what you and your motorcycle can accomplish, and it builds skills you don't have OR forgot you had. Another reminder is that Accident Scene Management is presenting Bystanders Assistance Courses April 25 – 27, 2003. April 25 is a refresher for grads of advanced classes within the last 2 years. April 26 is a basic course and April 27 is an advanced course that requires the basic course be taken. Each course is $25.00 and you can register at www.accidentscene.net. This is a great first aid course for motorcyclists. Start out your riding season right with a positive attitude and respect for other road users. Ride within your capabilities as you begin to renew your passion of this sport after a long break. Any questions or comments please contact me. Ride Free, Ride Safe, Ride Always Bruce S - Safety Officer Calling All HOG Members ….The 4th Annual Lightning Run is looking for a few good sponsors. With a group as large as the St. Paul HOG Chapter, odds are excellent that most of you work for a company, industry or association that may be willing to raise money to help fund the cure for diabetes…if only you would ask. Sponsorships range between $500 and $5,000, with notable advertising and community recognition as one of the guaranteed benefits! There are other creative ways your company can help beat this disease. Ask them to start a matching fund –all the dollars you and your associates can raise are matched with corporate dollars. Or if appropriate, simply ask them to donate products or services for the Live or Silent Auction. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. If you’d like to become more involved, receive a sponsorship packet, share a "contact name" from your workplace, or have already secured a donation, please contact Melanie G at the shop or Stephanie M, Sponsorship Team Leader, at ###. It only takes a few minutes to ask, but you could be buying time for a whole lot of people. Thanks! Hot Harley Nights Our chapter calendar shows a ride to a weekend in Sioux Falls SD for Hot Harley Nights July 11 and 12. The chapter has secured a very small block of rooms at the Holiday Inn City Centre located near the downtown festivities. These rooms are $84 per night and to access the block you'll need to give the "password" reference #. All we did was block the rooms, guaranteeing the room is between you and the hotel. The block is only held until June 1 so plan early and call (605) 339-2000. 2003 Mileage Contest The rules for the Chapter Mileage contest have been slightly modified for 2003. Rather than reprint the full rules here, I will just run down the changes and highlights (full rules will be posted at the shop.) $100 will be awarded to the entrant who rides the MOST miles. $50 will be awarded to the entrant whose mileage is CLOSEST to the average for all entrants. You may only accrue mileage on one bike at a time, but can change bikes by properly logging IN/OUT. On a sheet of paper write your NAME, bike YEAR & MODEL, the MILEAGE, and whether it’s the start or finish. Present the paper to the service desk or any chapter officer and ask them to verify, date, and sign-off on your odometer reading. Staple $1 to the form and ask the SPHD receptionist to place it in the Mileage Folder for Chapter Officers. One final rule: the entrant’s bike must be a Harley!
May - June 2003 From the Director's Chair There’s nothing quite like the crisp crackling of your V-twin motor coming to life after several months under wraps. The only thing that comes close is being in the midst of 50 V-twins collectively barking out a synchronized staccato as they carve up the same ribbon of asphalt. Or being part of a smaller group that glides across the prairie as a single moving part. There are a few rules of the road that streamline the group-riding experience for chapter rides, and learning these can also ease rides in smaller groups. At every SPHD Open House event we will be presenting an overview of the chapter with an emphasis on riding in a group. If you’re at all apprehensive about riding in a group, please try to attend one of these presentations. To honor a past Road Captain, the chapter mileage contest is now the C.John Horwath Memorial Mileage Contest. This is a fitting tribute to the man who signed his emails with his current odometer reading and the adage “…and still going strong.” It’s not too late to enter the contest for 2003. Last year’s winner was Kris R with 25,252 miles, followed by Tim R with 19,587, and Jim F with 17,647. But you don’t need to put on such serious mileage to win a prize, because we also recognize the “average rider.” So grab your dollar bill and register your odometer at the shop or the next meeting. While you’re grabbing dollar bills, grab an extra one for the pre-meeting meals served at our summer meetings the first Wednesday of each month. These meals are a great chance to meet your fellow members before the meeting starts. Every summer month’s meal was adopted except for July, and about one third of the hot dog dates were filled. This sort of volunteerism is great to see - let’s keep it up! And pick it up…the next date to pick up trash on the Adopt a Highway program is Saturday, May 24. Ben S - Director Let The Sun Shine SUNSHINE, COLD, SNOW, SAND & SALT, sounds to me that we are in the winter season. I know it sounds like my last article, but April brought a foot of snow to northern Minnesota and the Twin Cities has had rain, snow, & sleet. Then it was in the 70’s and the highways were full of motorcycles going in every direction. Only in Minnesota! Let’s take a moment in another direction. Chapter member Liz D’s mother passed away – let’s embrace Liz and Don in their loss. Butch from Butch’s Motorcycle Shop has passed away – let’s keep our brother in thoughts. While I did not know him personally I have been told he and his shop were an "icon" in the industry. Wedding bells rang for our Safety Officer Bruce S. and his new bride, chapter member Ellie N. Congrats you two! The breakfast meeting has moved to Sgt. Peppers in Oakdale every Saturday morning - orders are taken at 8:00AM. We’ve grown to about 30, and there is always room for more. Bring a friend or spouse as all are welcome. It’s usually hot coffee, good food, lots of talk about bikes, events and whatever else is on the menu. Remember, any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please feel free to call me, Ken L, a.k.a. Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8PM 7 days a week, or email Ken L - Hospitality Chairperson Safety First As we start out this riding season we need to keep in mind the safety involved with our renewed relationship with our best summertime friend. The excitement should not only be that of the wind in your hair and the rhythmic beat of the V-twin – let’s remember all the things we knew so well last fall. It’s been a few months since we’ve had to pay close attention to so much detail. There are even some folks who haven't driven their cars since the last time we were all on two wheels. There are more obstacles to look for, the need to recover our responsiveness, and just plain ol’ safety to consider. REMEMBER to "not ride beyond your abilities and limits".Do you know the meaning of the terms SIPDE, counter steering, high siding, or MSF? Now is the time to learn. St Paul HOG has coordinated 3 classes through Century College for hands on training with your own motorcycle. Motorcycle Safety Foundation certified instructors will help you sharpen your skills. The dates of these classes are 12 & 13 May 6:30-8:30, 15&16 May 6:30-8:30, and 14 June 1:30-7:00. Call 651-### to register and tell them you are a St. Paul HOG chapter member. There are also the Riders Edge classes offered by St Paul H-D. This is a basic course given to those who don't ride yet. Contact Kelly Carlson or one of her assistants at the shop for more information. Any of these classes being offered are well worth it because of the knowledge you gain about you and your scoot, in addition to getting back $50.00 in HOG bucks from Harley-Davidson for your successful completion. You also get a pin and patch for Safe Riders Skills. Ride Free, Ride Safe, Ride always Bruce S - Safety Officer Minnesota State HOG Rally – June 27 – 29, 2003 Ride and have fun! The Minnesota State HOG Rally committee, Minnesota HOG chapters, and St. Paul Harley-Davidson invite you to do just that at the 2003 "Rally on the River." The main site for the rally's numerous activities is Harriet Island, located just across the "Mighty Mississippi" from downtown St. Paul - a city filled with history from colorful gangsters like John Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson, and Ma Barker to the impressive 98 year old Capitol dome and lavish Summit Avenue. We start Friday June 27 with an exclusive tour of the Ford Motor Company
production plant. Tours will start every 30 minutes between 1:00PM and 4:00PM.
Directions to the plant will be provided in your rally package. Then enjoy a
great dinner and scenic cruise on the Mississippi River aboard a traditional
three-deck riverboat. To register for the river cruise ($30.00 a person), please
mail your completed rally pre-registration form by May 6, 2003. Space is limited
so register early. End the day with live entertainment by Pork Chop on
Harriet Island. Finally, the pre-registration deadline is May 6, 2003 at a cost of $30.00 per HOG member. On site registration at the Harriet Island Pavilion will be Friday, June 27 noon-8:00 PM and Saturday, June 28 8:00AM-2:00PM. The price goes up to $35.00 if you register on site. If you plan on bringing a non-HOG guest, they must register on site at the rally for $15.00. For more information, please contact the rally committee at 651-402-4223 or visit the website at www.mnstatehogrally.com.The 2003 Minnesota State HOG Rally won’t be possible without the help of each and every HOG member that attends. We would like each of our chapter members that attends to help out with a minimum of two hours (or more) of volunteer work. This year the St. Paul HOG chapter will be accountable to fill all 92 positions in Registration and the 34 positions for the Information Table. As of this writing we have filled over 50% of the openings! By all of us helping we can bring the chapter challenge trophy home to St. Paul H-D again this year! We still need positions filled for Registration: Friday: 2-4 pm, 4-6 pm, and 6-8 pm; Saturday: 10am–12pm, 12–2 pm, and 2-3 pm. We have openings for the Info Desk: Friday: 4-6 p.m., and 6-8 p.m.; Saturday: 10am–12 pm., 12–2 pm, 2-4 pm, and 4-6 pm; Sunday: 8-10 am, 10-12 am. Please call me to select a time to volunteer, or email me at the address below. You can volunteer and, at the same time, socialize with members from your chapter or other chapters as well. And remember, REV points will be given for your time.Ken B - Assistant Director and Rally Chapter Liaison P.S. In preparation of kickin’ butt at the State Rally Field Events, we will be having demonstrations of various field events at the May 2 chapter meeting at St. Paul H-D (weather permitting). If you’re interested in giving it a try, go for it! At the June 6 chapter meeting we will be holding a mock Field Events contest – again, all are welcome to participate. Hot Harley Nights July 11-12, 2003, Sioux Falls, SD Info: 605-334-2721 or 1-800-292-3531 www.hotharleynights.comThis is a large bike rally organized to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of South Dakota. This rally is very well organized and allows you to participate in all the events. The casino run highlights the parks of Sioux Falls. Also included are a silent auction, sponsor parties, police escorted parade which travels through Sioux Falls and Historic Downtown and ends at the Sioux Falls Brewing Company. This is also the location for the evening’s live entertainment (Rude Awakening) and bike show. There is a raffle for a 2003 883 Sportster as well. All activities and results are announced from the stage at the SF Brewing Company. The Holiday Inn City Centre in downtown Sioux Falls is the official hotel and is only 2 blocks from the SF Brewing Co. The St. Paul HOG chapter has reserved a block of rooms for those who are interested. To access the blocked rooms you need to mention this password: "64195597." So call (605) 339-2000 before June 1. I strongly recommend this rally and the Holiday Inn City Centre for your stay - you can park the bike at the hotel and walk to the party after the parade! I will be leading the ride (230 miles) to this rally, leaving Friday July 11 from the shop and returning Sunday July 13. Time of departure is flexible depending on the group, but I would like to leave somewhere in the 9:00-10:00 AM range. I hope many of you consider placing this event on your ride calendar for 2003. Kris R - St. Paul HOG Chapter Member
July - August 2003 From the Director's Chair I hope you’re enjoying the 2003 riding season and any vacation plans you have come together without a hitch. The first few chapter rides have been well planned and fairly well attended. The ride to Jake’s drew about 40 bikes and I heard someone remark that’s barely 2% of the chapter. Mathematically, that may be true…but I do not see this as an unhealthy warning sign for the chapter’s long-term success. Attendance at meetings is consistently around 125, and this tells me that interest in the chapter is high. But when it comes to “riding and having fun,” dog-gone-it… folks have lives and those lives place demand on free time to fill commitments on the weekends. Folks have varying reasons to join the chapter - perhaps being associated with a high-caliber event like the Lightning Run or State Rally is all the involvement some members can make time for. Others might have to work or be “on-call” every other weekend and it’s usually a weekend of our events. The examples are endless but my point is, this chapter is here to provide opportunities to “ride and have fun,” and I feel we succeed in that goal. I welcome your input. If I’m wrong, let me know so we can improve…and if I’m right join us when you get a chance! Some of you may be wondering how you can get even more involved in the chapter. On the back of this newsletter is a list of the volunteer members of the Board of Directors. Six posts are elected for 2-year terms and the rest are appointed, but not for life terms. A little churn on the board is a good thing and brings fresh ideas. Let me know if you’d like info and job descriptions for any position on the list. You never know, with an eager candidate waiting in the wings a position may open up sooner than you think. Ben S - Director Safety First Here we are, well into the prime of "two wheel" season. I hope everyone is enjoying it as much as I am. By the time you read this the State HOG rally will be over and good times should’ve been had by all. The next big event will be the 4th Annual Lightning Run. Let’s make, and keep, this event a safe one - remember there will be lots of bikes and riders attending. A few things I have encountered this season are the slippery tar snakes in the road. They make for an eye opening experience as you are in a corner and not expecting your front wheel to lose traction. Be careful of pavement markings that are decals (usually at intersections) and some lane markers as they are very slippery when wet. Steel sewer covers are also items that need special attention when wet - not much grip on them either. The past couple of years I have heard people talking about brakes that wore out quickly and I didn't pay too much attention. Now that I have an '02, I experienced this situation. With 10,500 miles on my scoot, my brake pads in the rear were toast. If you have a newer heavier scoot, check your brake pads regularly. If you are not sure about how to check them, stop by St Paul H-D and they can assist you. Two of the most important safe riding assessments are: traction (tires) and stopping ability (brakes). Be wise with these items. See ya on the road, with the rubber side down, and enjoy some great travels the rest of the season. Ride Free, Ride Safe, Ride always Bruce S - Safety Officer Let The Sun Shine With the Lightning Run just around the corner, volunteers are needed to sell raffle tickets and Lightning Run products. It can be a lot of fun! Please contact Ken L or Bonnie C if interested. On a sad note, we lost a good friend and brother this last month. Tom H was doing one of the things he loved – riding his motorcycle – when it was his time to pass. For those who knew him our thoughts are there for him. The breakfast meeting is at Sgt. Peppers in Oakdale every Saturday morning. Orders are taken at 8:00am. Bring a friend, spouse, etc., as all are welcome. It’s usually hot coffee, good food, lots of chain chat, and whatever else is on the menu. Remember, any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please feel free to call me, Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8PM 7 days a week, or email me. Ken L - Hospitality Chairperson Bull’s Eye Bonanza Our 9th annual handgun target shooting competition is Saturday, July 19. There will be two classes: .22's and Large Bore. Your target is a standard 25 yd target from 15 yards. Basic range safety rules will be enforced! The $10 fee covers one class and includes lunch. If shooting both classes, your fee is $16. For spectators who just want lunch it's $4.00. There are cash prizes for the top three in each class. Bring your own ammo, eye and ear protection. As with most chapter events, each member may bring one responsible guest. This year we will be going to a new private range near Hinckley, MN. We will depart from SPHD at 9:30AM. It is imperative that ALL participants RSVP, so call or email the Director by July 13th. Ben S - Director HOG History In February 1988, 59 Charter Members of our chapter held their first meeting. Fifteen years later, seven of them are still members. Our H.O.G. history is maintained in the legacy of these riders. And Jerry and Trudi R are two of the seven remaining Charter H.O.G. Members and Chapter Charter Members. In his early teens, Jerry made a motorbike using a lawnmower engine. At 16, he bought a 1941 Knucklehead, later a 1947 Knucklehead, and became a lifelong Harley rider. Jerry learned to ride on the gravel roads around Rochester, MN. During 4 years in the submarine service, a wrecked Knucklehead led him to pick up a 1949 Panhead EL. Jerry acquired a 52 K and rode in some east coast national enduros. Jerry still owns some Panheads and he rides them all! As you might imagine, Jerry and Trudi are active in the Antique Motorcycle Club of America. Trudi and Jerry met at a dance and most of their friends are riders. Trudi owns a 1952, 125cc model, but soon gave that up to ride behind Jerry. The rest is history. They have ridden in most of the 48 states plus Canada and Mexico. The western U.S. is their favorite area. They have a cabin in Spearfish Canyon, which is their base of operations during and after the Sturgis Rally. Jerry remembers Sturgis when "we camped in City Park and every day at noon the town put on a buffalo feed at noon - all free!" Jerry and Trudi typically ride alone and enjoy the riding experience together. A ride for them is usually a day or more trip from the cabin in the Black Hills. It was not unusual for them to ride to Sturgis via CA and BC. In their years of riding together, they have had three harrowing experiences and no accidents. High winds on the Mackinaw Bridge, flooded highways near the Red River in Texas, and a scary descent from Mt. St. Helens on a one lane volcanic ash logging road are etched in their memories. Jerry’s bit of advice is "Defensive driving and looking ahead as well as behind and around you." The Jerry and Trudi say the best improvements in Harley-Davidson motorcycles over the years are reliability, technical advancement and comfort. Their current motorcycle is a Road King. Though senior members of our Chapter, Jerry and Trudi say they love to ride and plan on riding their Harleys for years to come. Mike M - Chapter Historian 2nd Annual Erv's Memorial Ride We are pleased to announce that thanks to the extraordinary turnout for the inaugural Erv A Memorial Run, we will once again be holding "Erv’s Run," in memory of the late St Paul HOG Chapter Assistant Director. This year we will be riding in the 9th Annual Biker Memorial Run, a run held in honor of all our fallen brothers and sisters, on Saturday July 26. This year’s Erv’s Run will see some changes as we attempt to find a way to "ride and have fun" while we pay tribute to an avid motorcycle enthusiast and founding member of our chapter. We are planning a staggered start form Neuman’s Bar in North St Paul - meet there between 11am and noon to pick up your ride sheets. Then join a small group to head out on the ride, which will finish at the Hilltop Bar in Woodville, WI. Those who choose to participate in the run can turn in their ride sheets and pay their entry fee at that point for a chance to win prizes. Please watch for upcoming ride details, mark your calendar, and check the HOG Hotline for the latest details on the run. Hope to see you there. Jay M - St Paul HOG Member Volunteers Needed! You’re probably asking, "How can I help and why does she need me?" The 4th Annual Lightning Run is the answer. The Lightning Run takes place on Saturday, August 16th and is a biker rally against diabetes. The proceeds go directly to the Diabetes Institute for Immunology and Transplantation at the U of M. This institute is the world’s leader in diabetes cure research. A special thanks to all of the St. Paul HOG members that helped out last year - we couldn’t have done it without you! This year we need over 100 volunteers for a variety of fun and easy tasks. Most of these volunteers will be needed the day of the event, however we also need help before the event (delivering posters, selling raffle tickets, etc). Please consider helping this year. Most of the shifts are only 2-4 hours. The morning time slots are the easiest to fill, so if there is any way to help out in the late afternoon and/or evening at the party that would be wonderful. Contact me if you or someone you know want to volunteer. You won’t regret it, I promise! I have found that whenever I give of my time to help for a good cause that I get so much more back in return than I ever dreamed of. Visit www.lightningrun.com for more specific volunteer details. Thank YOU in advance, Dawn F - St. Paul HOG Member and Lighting Run Volunteer Coordinator "We ride for that day when the word diabetes holds neither meaning nor power."
September - October 2003 From the Director's Chair Thanks to the miracles of modern technology, I sat in Custer SD the night before deadline to write this column during my 15th visit to the Black Hills during the Sturgis rally. The weather was great for enjoying this 2-wheeled playground. The rally's a rally and the vendors are the vendors, but my real reason for returning every summer is the abundance of smooth roads that wind their way through pine forests and rock out-croppings often following a shallow brook. It sure is a great chance to utilize the entire tread surface of the tires while exploiting the full benefits of a working knowledge of counter-steering (now often referred to as "push-steering.") We are fortunate to have this area so close that you could ride here on just 4 tanks of gas. We are also fortunate to have so many dedicated HOG members willing to lend a hand to make things happen for our chapter. Be it working a shift at the State Rally or Lightning Run, or taking a turn at the grill for meetings or Hot Dog Saturdays, we all have a part to play. Please welcome these members who will be playing new parts for the chapter by serving on the Board of Directors: Angela B is our Activities Chairman and Tom T is our Safety Officer. Former Safety Officer Bruce S will now be serving as the Chapter Photographer. I hope you enjoy these positions and let me know if I can help you as you elevate your hobby to the next level. OFFICIAL NOTICE: At the November meeting we will hold elections for this cycle’s elected officers of Director, Secretary, and Treasurer for 2-year terms. Written nominations will be accepted at the September and October meetings. The nominations will be posted on the HOG Hotline after the September meeting and will close at the October meeting. The vote shall take place among those members present at the November meeting. If the preceding announcement makes our meetings sound dull and stuffy, it's just not true. If you're a new member, just throw yourself into the deep end of the pool. At first it may seem like you're on the outside looking in - we were all there once. If it seems like you're being ignored, it's only because folks are busy visiting with friends they met through the HOG chapter. You have a built in icebreaker with anyone and the initials are H-D. Here's to a great fall riding season...let's "ride, and have fun." Ben S - Director Shop News FALL PICNIC RIDE - St. Paul Harley-Davidson will host a Fall Picnic Ride for St. Paul H.O.G. Chapter members on Saturday, September 27, 2003. You guys rock!! Whether you helped with the Minnesota State H.O.G. Rally, the 4th Annual Lightning Run, trash pick-up, or another planned event, this chapter shows a commitment to being the best. As a small way to thank you for your continued support, Tom and I would like to invite you to a fall picnic ride on Saturday, September 27 just for St. Paul H.O.G. Members. Plans are underway for a ride to Ole’s Bar & Grill in Maiden Rock, WI. We’ll try to hit the road by 10:00 a.m., so get to the store before then to sign in and get your ticket for door prizes. Once we get to Ole’s, you’ll be treated to a picnic lunch followed by door prize drawings. If it’s pouring rain, we’ll move the ride to Sunday, September 28th. We need a count of interested riders, so please call Marge at the shop (651/738-2168) and let her know if you’ll be able to make it. By the way, the open house listed for September 27th in the last newsletter has been moved to October 4th due to the Harley-Davidson anniversary celebration and later delivery of ’04 models. Details of this event will be mailed to all of you who indicated an interest in remaining on our mailing list. If you missed that option, just pick up a card at the store or call and ask to be placed back on the list. Again – thank you for your support of the store and of the H.O.G. chapter. Hope to see you on the 27th! Call me at ### with any questions. Melanie G - St. Paul Harley-Davidson Let The Sun Shine Has this been great riding weather or what? The summer has been packed with great rides with the best still to roll out to rock the rest of the 2003 riding season. We have had a lot of new members hooking up with old members. It’s been very nice to see the friendships developing. I truly believe that this is what the St Paul HOG chapter is all about. Congrats to Ali K, now known as Ali C, as she tied the knot at the Sturgis rally! On a sad note, we lost a very good friend and brother in July. Charles S, a.k.a. "Harley Charley," passed away. For those who knew him our thoughts are with you. With the speed of the seasons clicking by it’s always nice to stay connected to friends both new and old. So come join us for breakfast - we meet every Saturday morning at Sgt. Peppers in Oakdale (694 & 10th Street). Orders are taken @ 8:00AM, or a little later for those who cannot get up early. Bring a friend, spouse, etc., as all are welcome to join in for good food, lots of bike talk, and whatever else is on the menu. Remember, any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please feel free to call me, Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8:00PM seven days a week, or email me. Written nominations will be accepted at the September and October meetings. The nominations will be posted on the HOG Hotline after the September meeting and will close at the October meeting. The vote shall take place among those members present at the November meeting. Activities Greetings fellow St. Paul HOG Members! My name is Angela B and I have been appointed as your new Activities Chairperson. I have been in the Chapter for two years and ride a Dyna Lowrider. I have had a great time making many new friends and look forward to my new adventure as Activities Chairperson. My first order of business is to organize the 2004 Winter Banquet. It seems January is a long ways away, but I have a feeling it’s going to sneak up on us as fast as this summer has gone by. I am looking for a few good people to help me organize this event. The more people involved, the less there will be for each person to do and of course, the more fun it will be. Please contact me by phone or email if you are interested. I will also be asking for support at upcoming meetings. My phone number is ###Angela B - Activities Chairperson Bull’s Eye Bonanza This year 20 shooters made their way to a tranquil meadow near Hinckley for the Bull’s Eye Bonanza target-shooting contest. Just as we were getting the first shots off, a more natural disturbance was brewing on the horizon as a solitary dark cloud made its presence known. It was agreed to truncate the practice session and make haste for the competition round. There was a short delay of game that had us huddling under trees and hay wagons. Next year I’ll bring one more tarp. Then the skies cleared and made way for sunshine and mosquitoes. The .22 class was won by Tom Y with 72 points, followed closely by Sue M with 69, and 3rd place went to Jim F with 59. On the large-bore side of the ledger there was a tie for first with a score of 80 turned in by both Craig M and Jim F. Craig M won the tiebreaker, leaving Jim with 2nd and Ben S 3rd with 73 points. Thanks to Susie S for rustling up the food and drink and to Kathy Y and a genuine Sandwich Artist (my niece Mallory) for transforming the packs of luncheon meats and cheeses into a mouth-watering deli tray. Ben S - DirectorFrom the Co-Pilot’s Seat Try to make the 4th annual chapter ride to Northfield on Saturday September 7 for the Defeat of Jesse James Days. Registration (at the shop) starts at 9:30AM, with departure set for 10:00. The ride will be no more than 100 miles, with a half hour stop at the midpoint. Reserved motorcycle parking has been arranged. Call the HOG Hotline for any last minute updates! Ken B - Assistant Director Free Caps and Do-Rags Got your attention, eh? Our date is set for the Adopt-A-Highway litter pickup as Saturday, September 20. Let’s meet at the shop, ready to hit the road at 9:00AM. We’ll be back to the shop before 11:00 and two lucky helpers will win $25 gift certificates. You might even get lucky and find a do-rag or a wrench or a cell phone with a salvageable battery. You can leave your bike at the shop - just wear work boots and gloves. If you have a truck or big car and can help with crew transport, give Ben a call. Ben S - Chief Trash Picker Upper 2003 Minnesota State HOG Rally Recap This year we had 1,300 participants. Ben and other members of the St. Paul HOG chapter rode 19 motorcycles to Sioux Falls on Friday to participate in the 8th annual Hot Harley Nights jamboree, which runs all day today. The group broke up the 254-mile trip by having lunch in New Ulm and making a stop at the historic Calumet Inn at Pipestone. "I'm looking forward to this," Ben said during the opening activities. The two-day event is organized by J&L Harley-Davidson and raises money for
the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes of children with
life-threatening medical conditions. Organizers wrote a $107,000 check to the
foundation last year and expect to raise a similar amount this year, said Jim E,
J&L co-owner. In its first year, the festival raised $3,000. This year's
pre-registrations were ahead of those for the 2002 event, which drew 3,500 bikes
in a parade that lasted 45 minutes. Participants are coming from Kansas City,
Des Moines, Fargo and Omaha, he said. "We should have 4,000 bikes and 30,000
people downtown," Jim said. Toby R, 29, of Aberdeen rode his 2002 custom hard-tail Harley, which he built
over the winter with help from friend Dave Z. Toby previously owned Sportsters.
"This is kind of a chopper," said Toby, dressed in a white tank top that allowed
him to show several tattoos, "I decided I would go a little wild this time." With evening temperatures in the 70s, Hot Harley Nights didn't live up to its name in one regard. But there was an abundance of hot motorcycles, as well as a collection of classic restored cars at the event's auto show. The conglomeration of Harleys in the J&L parking lot included a variety of styles and colors, and spanned several eras. Tom N, a Minneapolis engineer, rode a 1942 Knucklehead, Harley-Davidson's first motorcycle with an overhead valve. "It's older than I am, so that justifies the expense," the 56-year-old Tom said. "It's a great toy." Tom bought the motorcycle new (sic) in March 1968. He said, without hesitation, that he has owned it for 35 years, three months, two weeks and six days. He has received only a couple of inquiries about selling the bike, most likely because nearly everyone knows he won't consider selling it. "I think it's that obvious," said Tom, who owns four Harleys. He participates each year in several regional bike events, including the Sturgis Bike Rally, but this is his first time at Hot Harley Nights. "This has a lot of potential," he said. Reprinted with permission of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader. Top 10 Ways to Dump Your Bike Being too short for the bike you're riding, and coming to a stop sign. Let your buddy ride it. And if you are really stupid let him ride it again. Taking the wife on a ride on your brand new, first bike in 20+ years and making a slow, tight right turn on gravel. Having your fat-ass brother (as a pillion) lean waaay over to the side to look at something on the ground while at a stop sign. Getting pissed off for dropping it in the first place, yanking it vigorously off the ground, only to have it drop to the other side Forgetting to remove the disc lock and taking off from the curb with haste...Tends to break the front caliper, too. Stop for gas, carefully shut off ignition and take key out (to unlock tank), carefully remove helmet and set it over mirror, carefully remove gloves and place on instruments, open jacket, step off bike ... forgetting to put kick stand down. Your rider hops on before you are ready. Revving the engine, releasing clutch, and putting feet on pegs when the light turns green, but the bike's in neutral Riding beyond your limits while trying to keep up with someone who is probably riding beyond their own. Always a temptation Words of Wisdom Young riders pick a destination and go. Old riders pick a direction and go.
Nov ember - December 2003From the Director's Chair And the curtain falls on another riding season…but what a summer full of memories we are left with to fuel our anticipation of next year. From the first State Rally in St. Paul to the most successful Lightning Run so far, the summer just roared past with the Harley 100th always “top of mind.” How did we get so lucky that Harley was founded in a city that knows how to party, where neighborhoods fall over each other to host block parties, and the locals welcomed us home with open arms and waving flags? And in Saturday’s parade I had the distinct honor to carry our chapter’s flag. I haven’t seen many sunrises in my life, and will always remember, as that dark parking lot became a sea of chrome that morning at the zoo. Oh, who am I kidding? Having arrived for parade staging at 4am I was sound asleep under a tree. Who needs a 2:45 wake-up call when wild friends and Red Bull will allow you to stay up! 2004 is the start of my 3rd term as Director of your HOG chapter, and thank you for the opportunity to continue in this capacity. Also joining me for renewed terms are Secretary Paula Betz and Treasurer Lynn Nelson. Together with the rest of the board and the involvement of the chapter members I see no reason to let the momentum slow in 2004. We have plenty of activities planned this winter to maintain our inertia and give you a chance to stay connected with your fellow members. In fact, you’ll have a chance to get to know them beyond the limited communication of pointing at road kill during a group ride. In addition to the monthly meetings we can look forward to the winter banquet, the bowling party, and the LOH pool & dart tournament. And who knows what else we may add to the winter diversions. Stay tuned to the Hog Hotline or get on the Cyber-Swine so you don’t miss out on the fun! Ben S - Director Safety First Hello all St Paul H.O.G. members! My name is Tom T and I have been appointed your new Safety Officer. Please remember to thank Bruce S, our former Safety officer, for a job well done, and also wish him good luck in his new position as Chapter Photographer. It is hard to believe that the riding season is coming to an end, but I want to remind all of you who aren’t afraid to ride late into the season that early morning frost on the bridge decks can be dangerous. Another potentially hazardous thing to watch for are leaves that have either fallen into the road or have been raked there purposely - they can be slippery, more so when wet. It’s been a great year of riding, so let’s end the season safely! I am looking into having a C.P.R./accident scene management course during the winter months. I am looking for input as to whether this interests anyone, so please email me if you would be interested in this. If I get enough interest I can take it a step further and get the remaining info (dates, times, and cost). If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me. Ride safe! Bill L’s stepson was involved in a motorcycle accident, and he faces a long recovery. Tom C recently lost his brother. Please keep these chapter members and their families in your thoughts. On a lighter note, it’s time for BREAKFAST TRIVIA: When was the first chapter breakfast group started and by whom? Answer: Don F and Jerry & Trudi R in 1990-91 at what is now the Green Mill on Century Avenue. (I am looking for information on who else was in that group and how many restaurants have we moved to and how long Paul’s group has been meeting. I would like to give this information to our chapter historian). That is why I enjoy the group breakfast on Saturdays. It gives us a chance to make new friends and strengthen old friendships. Recently the group separated - we ended up at two restaurants, and oddly enough the leader of the original group moved the group back to Joseph’s. Sgt. Peppers quit serving breakfast as of Oct 1st. The rest of us moved back to Joseph’s in mid September. So come join us for breakfast - we meet every Saturday morning at Josephs in St Paul (Plato & Wabasha). Orders are taken @ 8:00am, or a little later for those who cannot get up early. Bring a friend, spouse, etc., as all are welcome. It’s usually hot coffee, good food, and lots of talk about bikes, events, and whatever else is on the menu. Remember, any information about chapter members that needs my attention, please feel free to call me, Mr. Sunshine, at ### before 8pm 7 days a week. There’s something ugly about a NEW bike on a trailer. The Year in Review What an event filled year this has been with HD's 100th, HOG's 20th, hosting
the first ever MN State HOG Rally in St Paul, a blowout LR4, plus Sturgis,
attending other State HOG Rallies, riding with friends on a long trip or just a
short putt...it was great! And the weather around here this riding season?
Nearly perfect. In fact, even Sturgis weather was moderate for a change, instead
